Scout the Fox

Microwave your kitchen sponge to “sanitize” it

Sort of 🔬 Evidence-based

The hack

Zap a wet sponge for 1–2 minutes to kill germs so it lasts longer.

Where it's popular: Epicurious: the common sponge-microwaving tip

Scout's verdict

A USDA study found microwaving a wet sponge for 1 minute killed over 99.9% of bacteria. A 2017 Scientific Reports study found regularly microwaved sponges in real homes weren’t less colonized than untreated ones, so experts still say replace sponges about weekly.

Evidence: USDA ARS: best ways to clean kitchen sponges · Scientific Reports (2017)

Bottom line: Helps between replacements; doesn’t replace replacing. Buy sponges in bulk.

⚠️ Safety

Sponge must be soaking wet and contain no metal (scrubby sponges can spark or catch fire). It comes out scalding: let it cool.
